Artificial selection

Wild camera designs created by artificial intelligence

These cameras do not exist. As real as they may seem, they were created using an artificial intelligence system called DALL-E 2, which can create realistic images based on text descriptions alone.

These strange and insane cameras were created using DALL-E 2, an artificial intelligence program created by OpenAI. The system was announced earlier this year and can create photorealistic images based on just a brief description and allows a person to easily edit the image with simple tools.

Not only can it create photos and images entirely from scratch, but it can also edit existing images.

Photographer and YouTuber Mathieu Stern decided to use DALL-E 2 to create some unusual cameras by giving it some brief descriptions.

“I’ve always wanted to create my own crazy camera design,” Stern says. “Here is a selection of the best camera designs I generated in a week using DALL-E 2.”

Stern posted on his Instagram a wide range of what he calls “insane camera designs” that cover a variety of themes. Some are based on movies like The Lord of the Rings, Star Wars, and Shrek:

Some TV icons like The Simpsons:

While others use themes like Ancient Egypt and Aztecs:

Some of the designs, such as the one that highlights Homer Simpson or the Spongebob Squarepants camera, look really weird, but others look like legitimately interesting designs that could be really fun or collectible, like the Iron Man , R2-D2, or Sauron-themed cameras.

DALL-E 2 is not available to everyone and is currently only accepting new users who join a waiting list. It’s not the only game in town either, as Google has also created a similar system.

“For me, this AI revolution is fascinating,” says Stern. “Generative art will be a powerful new tool to aid my creativity.”
