WATCH: NOPD says officer on leave was gunned down while driving in unmarked car on I-10

NEW ORLEANS (WGNO) – NOPD Superintendent Shaun Ferguson held a press conference outside the University Medical Center Tuesday night over an officer on leave from New Orleans hit by gunfire .

Ferguson began the briefing by reporting that an officer on leave had been shot. At approximately 8:50 pm, the officer was driving west in an “abnormal” unmarked police car on Interstate 10 near the St. Bernard intersection when he heard shards of glass.

According to Ferguson, the officer was unaware he had been punched at first. When he realized he had been hit, he went to the hospital where he is currently being treated for a deep scratch on his head.

Ferguson said he was responsive and in stable condition. He also said Mayor LaToya Cantrell was on his way to visit him in the hospital.

There are no suspects, description of the assailant’s vehicle or motive at this time.

“We cannot say for sure that he was targeted because he was a police officer,” Ferguson said, as the officer drove a car without NOPD markings or logo. “All we know now is that he was shot in the head, he’s in stable condition, and he’s responsive.

“This is an ongoing investigation that will be handled by our Force Investigation Team, which normally handles shootings involving officers. “
