In a bid to boost tourism and the economy, Saudi Arabia has announced one of its most ambitious construction plans. The Middle Eastern country will transform a desert land into a high-tech urban region called NEOM. NEOM’s futuristic megacity project has been described as “an attempt to do something that has never been done before and comes at a time when the world needs new ideas and new solutions”. It is built on the Red Sea in the northwest region of Saudi Arabia and emphasizes the diversification of the country’s economy, environmental protection, and the efficient and productive use of technology.
The NEOM project comprises three sub-projects, namely Oxagon, Trojena and The Line.
Announced by Crown Prince of Saudi Arabia Mohammed bin Salman (MBS) earlier this year, Trojena was touted as the world’s destination for mountain tourism in the smart city of Neom. The destination will offer a wealth of activities for tourists, including a ski village, ultra-luxury family and wellness resorts, a range of retail stores and restaurants, among others. It will also offer sports activities such as mountain biking and some water sports.
Trojena is located in the center of the city of NEom in a mountainous region which is also home to the highest peaks in Saudi Arabia. The project is expected to be completed by 2026.
Neom’s other sub-project, Oxagon, is described as “the largest floating industrial complex in the world”. The project will be 33 times the size of New York City and will host innovative industries. It aimed to make the city a net zero city where lean energy will be used to meet 100% energy needs. The city will adopt some of the most advanced technologies, including the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial and predictive intelligence, human-machine learning and robotics, among others.
The Line is another Neom smart city sub-project. It is a smart linear city that has been planned to accommodate one million inhabitants. The urban development will be environmentally friendly where the streets will be car free and residents will be able to meet their daily needs in just a five minute walk. Line City communities will be powered by artificial intelligence (AI). It will feature urban developments that will be carbon positive and use 100% clean energy.
