Racist vandals have degraded a George floyd Black Lives Matter mural with far right symbols.
As good as Black lives matter of protests that have taken place around the world, anti-racist activists have painted murals to commemorate George Floyd.
He was killed in Minneapolis, Minnesota, United States, after a police officer knelt on his neck for nearly nine minutes.
A mural, in the Hilltown area of Dundee, was degraded with symbols of white supremacy just days after its completion.
Symon Matheson painted the piece on Friday.
He said, “This is my way of paying him a little respect.
“It’s not about me, it’s about movement. If there’s anything you can do, you should.
But only three days later, the room was smeared with racist symbols.
The vandals responsible painted the Celtic cross “sight” symbol, often used by Ku Klux Klan sympathizers, on the image of Floyd’s face.
The Anti-Defamation League Hate Symbols Database lists the sign as “one of the most important and commonly used white supremacist symbols” and highlights its common use by neo-Nazis and the Ku Klux Klan .
The word “black” was painted white, leaving the tagline at the bottom to simply read “Lives Matter” – and Mr. Floyd’s last name was painted over as well.
Joy Gansh, a Black Lives Matter activist who studies art alongside Symon in Dundee, says she is shocked by the vandalism.
But, she added, “Honestly, I’m not really shocked.
“I knew it was going to happen, I just didn’t think it would be so soon
Members of the anti-fascist group Action Dundee did their best to repair the damage.
They added the black word to the slogan and covered the cross with an anti-fascist emblem.
A statement from the group said: “Black lives matter. The degradation of George Floyd’s portrait was a deliberate act of hatred and ignorance.
“As a community, we must not tolerate racism in any form, especially from fascists.
“We will not let you spread your hatred in our community.”
They added: “We stand in solidarity with those in our community and with our brothers and sisters around the world affected by racism every day.”
“We hope that whatever fascist scumbag painted this knows it barely lasted.
Scottish police say they have not yet received any reports of the vandalism.
