Benildean’s thesis gives rise to “solar cooling”

As a tropical country whose climate is made worse by the impact of global warming, the weather in the Philippines can inevitably be hot.

This is where Kristian Rafael Tan, 23, drew the inspiration for his final requirement for his degree in industrial design at De La Salle-College in Saint Benilde.

For his thesis, Tan invented a solar powered cooling vest as a potential solution to help cool the wearer, intended to be a “cooling” device for construction workers who typically work in the scorching sun.

Besides its cooling function via a removable fan, the young inventor used solar energy as the main source of energy. Tan has also made sure that the vest is affordable for the general public.

He plans to offer his original work to large corporations to finance and improve the invention and eventually aim for mass production. With his brilliant invention, Tan easily won the “Best Thesis” award.
